2 Samuel 9/ Luke 1
Blessed Is He Who Humbly Believes In God’s Words; The Proud And The Disbelief Gets Nothing
2 Samuel 9/ Luke 1
2 Samuel 9:1
David wanted to show kindness to those who were left in the house of Saul because of Jonathan.
Luke 1:1-7
Luke had carefully investigated everything from the beginning and wrote an orderly account, so that people may know the certainty of the things they have been taught. There was a priest and his wife who were honest in the sight of God. They observed all the commandments and regulations blamelessly. But they had no children.
ON COMPARISON, 2 Sam. 9:1/Luke 1:1-7
Our God, King of Heaven wants to show His mercy and grace to sinners, the ungodly, because of His Beloved Son Jesus. But who can receive this grace? It is he who believes in God’s words humbly, repents in faith, and keeps His words. Zechariah was one of this kind of people.
2 Samuel 9:2
A servant of Saul’s household Ziba was called to see David. Ziba in Hebrew means status.
Luke 1:8-13
When Zechariah was on duty in the temple according to the custom of the priesthood, an angel of the Lord appeared to him. The angel told him about the good news that his wife would give him a son. But Zechariah was a little bit shocked and surprised.
ON COMPARISON, 2 Sam. 9:2/Luke 1:8-13
Ziba was a servant of Saul. That means he was a slave of the world. He had the wisdom of the world, and he worshiped gods of the world. Therefore, he had lots of money and was powerful, fortune of the world.
Priest Zechariah was different from Ziba. He was a humble man and a servant of God. He believed in God’s words and kept His words. He served God faithfully in the temple and burned incense according to the custom of the priesthood. But he received blessing from Heaven. The angel appeared to him when he was serving the Lord.
2 Samuel 9:3
King David wondered whom he could show kindness. Ziba answered there was still a son of Jonathan left who was crippled in both feet.
Luke 1:14-19
The honest will rejoice. The angel told Zechariah that his son would be great in the sight of the Lord. This son would never take wine or other fermented drink, and he would be filled with the Holy Spirit from the birth. This son would bring many back their Lord. This son would have the spirit and power of Elijah. He would make ready a people prepared for the Lord. But Zechariah did not believe when he heard God’s word.
ON COMPARISON, 2 Sam. 9:3/Luke 1:14-19
Mephibosheth was looked down by people, but the king wanted to give him favor. Zechariah had nothing on the world. But he served before God as a priest faithfully and humbly, he would be rewarded and rejoice. God would give him a son who would accomplish the work of God. It was a pity that he did not believe God’s word when he looked at himself and others (his wife) by sight.
2 Samuel 9:4
King David asked where this son was? Machir means sold. Ammiel means kindred of God. Lo Debar means pastureless, not a word, or nothing. This son did not have his own house, he had nothing. But the king was looking for him.
Luke 1:20-25
God’s words will come true at their proper time. But he who does not believe God’s words will not be able to speak as a mute. Elizabeth truly became pregnant as God foretold. She kept herself from people. She praised God for He had shown favor to her and taken away her disgrace among the people.
ON COMPARISON, 2 Sam. 9:4/Luke 1:20-25
Mephibosheth was poor and had nothing on the world, no house, no servant and no power. But he was willing to receive the favor of King David humbly. He is the kind of person our Heavenly King is looking for. Every word of God would come true at the proper time. Zechariah the priest did not believe so that he became a mute and could not speak.
2 Samuel 9:5
The king had this son of Jonathan come before him.
Luke 1:26-31
Here we see God sent an angel to greet virgin Mary, “you who highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary did not understand it, and she wondered what did that mean. Then the agnel told her, “Mary, you will be with child and give birth to a son.”
ON COMPARISON, 2 Sam.9:5/Luke 1:26-31
The king called the crippled come to him. The angel was sent by God to the virgin Mary. Blessed are those who are humble and receive God’s grace in faith.
2 Samuel 9:6
Mephibosheth, which means idol-breaker, came and bowed down to honor David.
Luke 1:32-37
The angel told Mary to name this son Jesus. He would be great and would be called the Son of the Most High. Mary did not understand and asked the angel, “How will this be since I am a virgin?” The angel explained to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you….Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age…For nothing is impossible with God.”
ON COMPARISON, 2 Sam. 9:6/Luke 1: 32-37
He who is humble and fears God will be great in the sight of the Lord. But how will this be? For nothing is impossible with God’s words and the power of the Holy Spirit.
2 Samuel 9:7
David comforted him not to be afraid. David would bless him and restore all the land that belonged to his grandfather. Mephibosheth would always eat at the king’s table.
Luke 1:38-44
When Mary heard it, she understood and answered at once, “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said.” Then she hurried to visited Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped for joy in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and confirmed to Mary what the angel had told her.
ON COMPARISON, 2 Sam. 9:7/Luke 1:38-44
Fear not. You who humbly believe and receive the Lord’s grace will get inheritance. And you will always eat at the king’s table. Blessed are those who believe in God’s words and desire God’s word be done to them as God has said. They are confirmed in spirit when they greet each other. They have been moved by the same spirit.
2 Samuel 9:8
Mephibosheth knew himself was nothing but a dead dog. He was grateful for the kindness of king David.
Luke 1:45-50
Blessed is she who glorifies the Lord and has believed that what God has said to her will be accomplished. Mary rejoiced in God her Savior. She gave praise to God, “He has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me. His mercy extends to those who fear Him from generation to generation.”
ON COMPARISON, 2 Sam. 9:8/Luke 1:45-50
Mephibosheth knew that he was nothing but like a dead dog. This kind of people know that they are unworthy of God’s favor. They are grateful for God’s grace. They believe what God has said to them will come true when the proper time comes. Therefore, their souls glorify the Lord and their spirits rejoice in God. Just as Mary was grateful and gave thanks to God, “From now on all generations will call me blessed, for He has done great things for me…God has extends His mercy to those who fear Him, from generation to generation.”
2 Samuel 9:9
Then David told Ziba that he had given Mephibosheth everything that belonged to Saul and his family.
Luke 1:51-56
God has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever.
ON COMPARISON, 2 Sam. 9:9/Luke 1:51-56
God gives everything to those who humbly believe in Him and keeps His words by grace. God scatters the proud who depend on their own wisdom to seek vanity of the world so that they receive nothing from God, just like Ziba. God has brought down rulers from their thrones, and send the rich away empty.
2 Samuel 9:10
Ziba and his sons and servants were to farm the land for Mephibosheth.
Luke 1:57-62
When it was time for Elizabeth to give birth, she had a son. Her nighbors and relatives heard that, they shared her joy. On the eighth day, they circumcised the child and they asked Zechariah what name he would like to give to this child.
ON COMPARISON, 2 Sam. 9:10/Luke 1:57-62
Ziba and his houehold became servants of Mephibosheth. The Bible said all things work for the good of those who love God. Zechariah the priest had a son when the time came. He continued to do right and keeps God’s words. He circumcised the child and named him according to God’s instruction.
2 Samuel 9:11-13
Then Ziba said he would do as David commanded him. King David told Ziba that Mephibosheth would be like one of the king’s son. Mephibosheth had only a young son. All the members of Ziba’s household were servants of Mehibosheth. Mephibosheth then lived in Jerusalem and he always ate at the king’s table. He was crippled in both feet. God’s pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man. (Psalm 147:10)
Luke 1:63-80
When Zachriah named the child according to God’s instruction, at once his mouth could speak. He was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: Praise be to the Lord, because He has come and has redeemed His people. God has raised up a horn of salvation to deliver His people from the hand of the enemies. God has redeemed us to enable us to serve Him without fear in holiness before Him all our days. Zechariah prophesied about John the Baptist: My child, you would go on before the Lord to prepare the way for Jesus. You would give God’s people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins. It is God’s mercy that He will guide our feet into the path of peace.
And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the desert until he appeared publicly to Israel.
ON COMPARISON, 2 Sam. 9:11-13/Luke 1:63-80
Mephibosheth had only one young son. Zechariah also had only one child. Both of them had no power or anything of the world. But Mephibosheth could be near the king like a prince; and Zechariah could serve the Lord in the holy temple. Both of them were loved and regarded as great in the sight of God.
Mephibosheth was crippled in both feet. John the Baptist also did not walk in his own way or sought after the world. His feet were as crippled to his own way and the worldly way. He lived in the desert, he desired nothing but the Lord. Therefore, he grew and became strong in spirit so that he could accomplish God’s plan in the proper time. He would show people how to be saved through forgiveness of sins. He would guide people to the path of peace by God’s mercy.
